Ireland Records All-Time High International Enrolments, Driven by Indian and US Students

February 06, 2026

As per the recent reports, Ireland’s higher education sector has recorded the highest ever number of international student enrolments in the 2024-25 academic year, with Indian and United States students being the top contributors. An approximate number of 44,500 international students were enrolled in the 2024-25 academic year, surpassing the previous year’s total of 40,000 by 10%. Recent enrolment data shows a remarkable rise in the number of international students choosing Ireland for higher education, continuing a long-term growth and supporting the country’s role as a leading destination for international education.

Indian students emerged as the largest international student population in Ireland for the second year in a row. In the 2024-25 academic year, enrolments from Indian students leapt by 30%, which made them a key driver of the growth. United States students, who had been the largest population until the previous academic year, came in second, marking the fourth consecutive year of growth in the American international student population. Meanwhile, enrolments from the UK have gone down by 5% year over year. However, as the UK will be rejoining the Erasmus+ programme in 2027, it is expected to rise back again.

The strong growth in international enrolment has been influenced by Ireland’s favourable visa policies and work opportunities after graduation, especially in sectors such as engineering, IT, data analytics and healthcare. Ireland’s reputation as a leading global technology hub and headquarters for many multinational companies has made it appealing among international students seeking quality education and career opportunities after graduation.
