New Zealand Earns Nearly 5 Billion From International Students in 2026 

New Zealand’s international education sector is continuing its recovery, with the country recording another strong year of growth from international students. The latest figures show that the sector has now moved beyond its pre-COVID level, marking a significant milestone as New Zealand works to rebuild its position as a destination for students from overseas. 

For the year ending June 2026, New Zealand’s international education sector generated NZ$4.98 billion in international student expenditure, according to figures released by the Government. The figure has risen steadily over the past three years, from NZ$3.53 billion in 2024 to NZ$4.30 billion in 2025, before reaching nearly NZ$5 billion in 2026. 

The latest result represents three consecutive years of growth and comes as international student numbers continue to recover. New Zealand recorded 92,580 international student enrolments in 2025, up from 69,140 in 2023. The Government says the country is on track to reach around 99,000 international students in 2026. While enrolments remain below the level recorded before COVID-19, the latest figures show that the sector is continuing to regain momentum. 

Growth is also being recorded across different parts of New Zealand’s education system. International enrolments at universities increased by 14% compared with the same period a year earlier, while school enrolments rose by 9%. Primary school enrolments recorded a stronger 22% increase, according to the Government, highlighting the broad-based recovery in demand from international students. 

The impact of international education extends beyond universities, schools and other education providers. International students contribute to activity across accommodation, transport, cafés and restaurants, retail and other local businesses. The Government says this spending supports jobs, strengthens local businesses and contributes to economic activity in communities across New Zealand. 

New Zealand is now looking to build on this growth through its International Education Going for Growth Plan, launched in July 2025. The plan aims to double the value of international education from NZ$3.6 billion in 2024 to NZ$7.2 billion by 2034. It also includes a target of 105,000 international student enrolments by 2027, reflecting the Government’s broader ambition to make New Zealand a destination of choice for international students.
