The United Kingdom has introduced changes to its immigration rules for participants in the Erasmus+ programme, effective 8 October 2026. The revised provisions establish clearer options for eligible participants travelling to the UK for educational exchanges and professional development activities. The changes are intended to make it easier for participating organisations to host visitors while ensuring that their activities meet the country’s immigration requirements.
A key change is that eligible Erasmus+ participants can undertake specified activities under the Standard Visitor route without requiring their UK host organisations to sponsor them. The provisions cover activities such as short-term study, training, job shadowing and certain educational exchanges. Previously, some placements required participants to use immigration routes involving formal sponsorship, depending on the nature of their activities. The revised rules provide an additional option for those whose planned visits meet the Visitor route conditions.
The changes cover several types of Erasmus+ mobility activities. Participants may study at eligible educational institutions, attend workshops and seminars, receive or provide training, and take part in job shadowing. Certain youth programme activities and coaching or training placements at UK sports organisations are also permitted. However, visitors undertaking job shadowing must observe rather than fill an existing position. The activities must form part of a genuine Erasmus+ mobility project and comply with the conditions attached to the relevant visitor permission.
Traineeships have specific restrictions under the revised provisions. The Standard Visitor route permits Erasmus+ traineeships only for participants aged 18 or younger, with a maximum duration of 30 days. These placements must take place at an eligible UK organisation or educational institution, and working hours must comply with UK regulations for young people. Participants under 18 undertaking traineeships or job shadowing must also provide written permission from their parent or legal guardian and their home institution.
The changes do not introduce a separate Erasmus+ visa or remove the need to obtain appropriate immigration permission. Depending on their nationality, participants may need a Standard Visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). They must also provide evidence of their Erasmus+ placement, including details of the activity, host organisation and dates of the visit. Those undertaking placements that fall outside the permitted visitor activities may still need a Government Authorised Exchange visa, which requires a Certificate of Sponsorship.
The revised rules provide eligible Erasmus+ participants and their host organisations with a more accessible route for specific short-term educational activities in the UK. However, the appropriate immigration route depends on the participant’s age, planned activities and length of stay. Participants should check the official UK government guidance before making travel arrangements to ensure that their placement meets the applicable requirements.
