The academic partnership between Canada and India has entered a new chapter following the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in early March 2026. During the visit, Canada announced a $100 million scholarship initiative for Indian students under its new education policy. The funding is designed to support eligible students in pursuing higher education in Canada by easing tuition and living expenses.
The initiative aims at a broader educational partnership between the two countries and stronger academic mobility. Indian students represent one of the largest international student groups in Canada, and the new scholarship aims to make Canadian education more accessible for those seeking undergraduate, postgraduate, and research opportunities.
Under the new framework, up to 200 fully funded scholarships will be awarded to Indian students through collaborations with Canadian universities and research institutions. The program is expected to prioritise students in fields that contribute to Canada’s economic and research interests, such as engineering, technology, healthcare, etc.
Officials say the initiative encourages institutional collaboration between Canadian and Indian universities and reflects strong long-term opportunities for Indian students considering Canada as their destination for higher education. Through joint initiatives and academic exchanges, the program is expected to strengthen educational relationships between the two countries.
For Indian students, the program could offer access to world-class education and research opportunities while facilitating reduced financial barriers associated with studying abroad. As the program moves forward, the initiative reflects the growing academic cooperation between Canada and India, majorly focused on student mobility and institutional partnerships.
