Oxford Survey Finds Indian Students Are Choosing International Education While Planning Their Future in India

Studying abroad has long been seen as the first step towards building a life overseas. However, a new survey by Oxford International suggests that this perception is changing, with many Indian students viewing international education as a way to gain global experience before returning home. 

The survey found that 81% of Indian study-abroad aspirants plan to return to India after completing their courses. Instead of treating overseas education as a pathway to permanent migration, many respondents said they see it as an opportunity to acquire internationally recognised qualifications, global exposure, and skills that can support their long-term careers in India. 

Another notable finding is that nearly nine in ten respondents were first-generation international students. This indicates that overseas education is reaching a broader segment of Indian society, with more families exploring global education opportunities for the first time. 

The findings also reflect a changing mindset among students. While countries such as Australia, the UK, Canada, the US, and New Zealand continue to attract Indian learners, the focus is increasingly shifting from where to settle to what value an international education can bring. For many, the goal is to return with stronger qualifications, wider perspectives, and practical experience that can be applied in India’s evolving job market. 

Although the survey captures students’ intentions rather than the reasons behind them, the trend aligns with India’s growing demand for globally skilled professionals. Expanding career opportunities, a thriving start-up ecosystem, and the presence of multinational companies are making India an increasingly attractive destination for graduates returning with international experience. 

For students considering overseas education, the survey offers an important reminder that success is not defined solely by permanent migration. An international degree can create opportunities across borders, whether graduates choose to work abroad, return to India, or build careers that span both markets. 

As Indian students continue to embrace international education, their aspirations appear to be evolving alongside it. The Oxford International survey suggests that studying abroad is becoming less about leaving home permanently and more about returning with the knowledge, skills, and global perspective to make a meaningful impact.
