UGC Grants Approval for Bristol, York and UNSW to Begin Student Intake in Mumbai and Bengaluru

June 13, 2026

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted approval to the University of Bristol, the University of York and UNSW Sydney to begin student intake at their upcoming campuses in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Bristol and York will operate in Mumbai, while UNSW Bengaluru is scheduled to open from August 2026 at Manyata Business Park.

This development adds to India’s ongoing push to bring reputed foreign universities into the country under the NEP 2020 framework. The campuses are expected to offer programmes in areas such as business, computer science, data science, cybersecurity and finance.

The approvals were issued under the UGC’s Foreign Higher Educational Institutions Regulations, which allow eligible overseas institutions to establish campuses and award qualifications in India. Universities operating under the framework are required to maintain academic standards comparable to those at their home campuses and comply with regulatory requirements set by the UGC.

The University of Bristol and the University of York become the latest UK institutions to establish a physical presence in India, reflecting growing interest among international universities in the country’s higher education sector. UNSW Sydney’s Bengaluru campus also marks a significant expansion of Australian university engagement in India, building on broader educational cooperation between the two countries.

The move is expected to provide students with greater access to international learning opportunities within India. By bringing globally recognised institutions closer to home, the initiative aims to expand academic choice and strengthen links between higher education and industry. The planned programmes in technology, business and data-driven fields are also aligned with areas of growing demand in the labour market.

The latest approvals represent another milestone in India’s efforts to position itself as a destination for global education. As preparations for the new campuses move forward, further announcements regarding admissions, programme structures and academic partnerships are expected in the coming months.
