UPI Users to Get Biometric Authentication Feature — PhonePe, Paytm, and Google Pay to Roll Out the Upgrade

October 09, 2025

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is set for a major upgrade, offering users a faster and more secure way to authenticate transactions. From October 8th 2025, leading payment apps like— PhonePe, Paytm, and Google Pay — will introduce biometric authentication using facial recognition and fingerprint scans, alongside the traditional 4-digit UPI PIN.

This new feature comes under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s updated guidelines on digital payment security and is supported by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The integration leverages the Aadhaar biometric framework, enabling users to verify payments or reset their UPI PINs through face or fingerprint authentication, reducing dependency on OTPs or manual inputs.

“The introduction of biometric verification will mark a new era in digital payment security, offering a more seamless and fraud-resistant experience for UPI users,” an NPCI official stated.

Key Highlights:

  • Enhanced Security: Each transaction will be validated through biometric data tied to Aadhaar, reducing the risk of unauthorized access.
  • Improved User Experience: Users can perform faster transactions and PIN resets without repeated OTP verification.
  • Frictionless Payments: Simplified authentication is expected to boost user convenience and transaction speed across UPI platforms.

With over 400 million active UPI users, the biometric upgrade is anticipated to strengthen India’s position as a global leader in digital payments, reinforcing the government’s vision of a secure and inclusive digital economy.
