Canada continues to evolve its immigration pathways to support critical sectors, and one of the biggest opportunities this year is in healthcare. According to recent updates from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), there are six healthcare occupations that are being prioritised for permanent residence — and many of them require just two years of college or less.
This is welcome news for international students and skilled workers in health-related fields. While some medical professions need extensive training, this priority list includes roles that can be accessed through shorter college-level programs, such as:
- Medical laboratory assistants and related technicians– ~1 year
- Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates– ~6–12 months
- Other technical occupations in therapy and assessment– ~2 years
- Paramedical occupations– ~1–2 years
- Pharmacy assistants and technical assistants– ~6–12 months
- Pharmacy technicians– ~2 years
These roles are essential to the functioning of Canada’s healthcare system and play a vital part in patient care, diagnostics, and support services. They are also recognized under Canada’s Express Entry system, meaning professionals in these occupations may gain a competitive advantage when applying for Canadian permanent residence especially through category-based Express Entry draws that signal demand for healthcare experience.
Another encouraging aspect is that many of these positions don’t require long university degrees, making them accessible for diploma holders, allied health graduates and international students. This aligns well with career pathways where post-secondary education is shorter but still enables meaningful, in-demand work across Canada’s provinces and territories.
For students considering healthcare programs, or professionals exploring international opportunities, this is a valuable trend to watch closely in 2026 and beyond.
