New Zealand Introduces Two New Skilled Residence Pathways from 24 August 2026

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is introducing two new pathways under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa from 24 August 2026, providing additional routes to New Zealand residence for experienced skilled workers and eligible trades and technical professionals.

1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway

This new pathway is designed for migrants working in skilled ANZSCO skill level 1–3 occupations who have substantial directly relevant work experience.

Applicants will generally need at least 5 years of directly relevant skilled work experience, including at least 2 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand. The required New Zealand employment must meet the applicable SMC wage threshold, with the pathway requiring earnings of at least 1.1 times the median wage.

This means relevant experience gained outside New Zealand can contribute towards the overall experience requirement, but applicants must also complete the required period of skilled employment in New Zealand.

In simple terms:
Relevant overseas experience + required skilled work experience in New Zealand → potential pathway to residence.

2. Trades & Technician Pathway

This pathway is specifically designed for people working in specified trades and technician occupations included in INZ’s eligible occupation list.

Applicants will need a relevant Level 4 or higher qualification and at least 4 years of directly relevant post-qualification work experience, including at least 1.5 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand paid at or above the applicable SMC median wage.

The pathway covers a range of eligible occupations, including selected technical, construction, engineering, mechanical and other trade-related roles.

In simple terms:
Relevant trade/technical qualification + work experience + required NZ skilled work → potential pathway to residence.

What this means for prospective migrants

These changes give skilled workers more options to work towards New Zealand residence, particularly for applicants who have substantial professional experience or are qualified in eligible trades and technical occupations.

Effective from: 24 August 2026
