The UK Government has announced significant updates to the Student Route and Graduate Route visa regulations, which will directly affect international students planning to study and stay in the UK after graduation.
1. Increased Financial (Maintenance) Requirement
Effective 11 November 2025, students applying under the Student Route must demonstrate higher proof of funds to meet the updated living cost criteria:
- Studying in London: £1,529 per month (for up to 9 months)
- Studying outside London: £1,171 per month (for up to 9 months)
Additionally, the maximum deduction for paid accommodation has been increased, requiring students to plan their financial documents carefully when preparing their visa applications.
2. Changes to Graduate Route (Post-Study Work Visa)
From 1 January 2027, new rules will shorten the post-study stay period under the Graduate Route:
- Bachelor’s & Master’s graduates: 18 months (currently 2 years)
- PhD graduates: No change – remain eligible for 3 years
Students who apply before 1 January 2027 will still be eligible for the current 2-year Graduate Route stay period.
