New Zealand Expands Post-Study Work Rights and Launches New Graduate Visa Pathway

June 04, 2026

New Zealand is set to reshape its post-study work framework by introducing a new six‑month Short‑term Graduate Work Visa while expanding eligibility for the existing Post‑Study Work Visa. These updates are expected to take effect from 16 November 2026, expanding the range of post-study options available to international students. By expanding post-study work rights, the government aims to bridge the gap between academic completion and long-term employment. These reforms provide crucial support for international students seeking to build professional careers within the country, ensuring that the transition from education to the workforce is more accessible and organised.

The New 6-Month Graduate Visa Pathway

From 16 November 2026, New Zealand will open a new six-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. This visa serves as a direct alternative for international students who finish their studies but do not meet the criteria for the standard Post Study Work Visa. The pathway is designed for graduates of eligible NZQCF Level 5 to Level 7 qualifications completed in New Zealand, provided they studied full time for at least 24 weeks. Graduates who secure this short-term visa are permitted to stay in New Zealand for six months specifically to search for job opportunities. This pathway addresses a gap in the existing post-study framework by providing eligible graduates with additional time to establish their next steps.

To qualify for this pathway, the formal application must be submitted within three months of the student’s current visa expiration date, and applicants are required to prove they possess sufficient funds, such as at least NZD $5,000, to support themselves as dictated by individual visa regulations. This initiative provides a vital safety net, allowing individuals to establish a foundation for their careers without facing immediate migratory pressure.

Expanded Eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa

New Zealand is also expanding access to its existing Post-Study Work Visa from November 2026, granting broader opportunities for international graduates to secure employment and gain valuable work experience. Under the updated regulations, international students who successfully complete a New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) Level 7 Graduate Diploma will become eligible to apply for a Post-Study Work Visa. However, to qualify for this expanded pathway, candidates must already hold a recognized bachelor’s degree. The prerequisite bachelor’s degree offers significant flexibility, as Immigration New Zealand accepts degrees completed either within New Zealand or at an overseas institution.

The revised eligibility criteria are expected to benefit a wider range of international students who choose to pursue specialised graduate-level qualifications in New Zealand. By recognising prior academic achievements alongside Graduate Diploma studies, the updated rules provide greater flexibility for eligible graduates.

Together, the introduction of the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa and the expansion of Post-Study Work Visa eligibility demonstrate New Zealand’s commitment to strengthening its international education sector while addressing evolving labour market needs. For international students, these reforms offer greater certainty and flexibility when planning both their academic journey and future career prospects in New Zealand.
