India-New Zealand FTA Brings Mobility for Students and Skilled Professionals into Focus

May 25, 2026

India and New Zealand officially signed the much-anticipated Free Trade Agreement in April 2026, introducing
dedicated pathways for student mobility and post-study work visas for Indian students and professionals. The
agreement marks a major step in expanding education, workforce development, and trade between both countries.

India has long been one of the largest contributors to global education, delivering a consistent flow of
ambitious and talented students to destinations across the globe. The agreement introduces several new
collaborations to strengthen academic and professional ties between the two countries. By introducing a robust,
effective mobility framework, this deal simplifies the shift from academic study to professional employment,
strongly placing New Zealand as a prime destination for global education.

For students heading to New Zealand, the benefits start from day one. The new rule allows Indian students to work
up to 20 hours a week while studying in New Zealand. Once you complete your education, it gets even better. If
you graduate in a STEM field, you can stay and work in New Zealand for up to three years. For those completing a
Ph.D., the post-study work window extends up to four years, giving you a great deal of support in building an
international career.

The agreement also provides opportunities for working professionals. It introduces a brand-new Temporary
Employment Entry (TEE) visa, reserving 5000 spots at any given time for Indian workers. Whether you are in IT,
engineering, healthcare, education, or even specialized fields like culinary arts and yoga instruction, this
visa lets you live and work in New Zealand for up to three years. In addition to that, a new Working Holiday
Visa will give 1000 young Indians annually the chance to travel, explore, and work in the country for up to 12
months.

Funded by New Zealand’s $20 billion investment in India over the coming years, this Free Trade Agreement is
definitely a milestone that supports India’s pathways for international talent mobility. As both finalize their
legal details to bring these rules into effect, students and professionals planning for a career in New Zealand
can use this time to organize their credentials and track official New Zealand immigration updates for the
formal release of the application guidelines.
