New Zealand Announces Enhanced Work Rights for International Students – Effective 3 November 2025

November 04, 2025

In a landmark announcement, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has confirmed new and improved work rights for international students, effective from 3 November 2025. The update is part of New Zealand’s broader strategy to strengthen its international education sector and offer greater support to students who wish to gain valuable work experience while studying.

Under the revised policy, international students will now be permitted to work up to 25 hours per week during term time, an increase from the previous limit of 20 hours. This change aims to provide students with additional financial flexibility and more opportunities to engage with New Zealand’s workforce while pursuing their education.

Work rights have also been extended to all tertiary exchange and Study Abroad students, ensuring that a wider range of learners can benefit from in-study work opportunities. In addition, dependents of student visa holders will now be allowed to work up to 25 hours per week, reflecting a more inclusive and family-friendly approach.

The announcement also clarifies that students who change their education provider or level of study may be required to apply for a new visa to ensure that their updated academic plans are reflected accurately in their visa conditions.

For students already holding visas, different transition arrangements will apply. Those whose visas were issued before 18 August 2025 can apply online to update their work conditions to 25 hours per week through a “variation of conditions” process. Meanwhile, visas issued after 18 August 2025 will automatically include the new work rights under the enhanced Immigration Online portal.

Officials from Immigration New Zealand have emphasized that the new policy aligns with the government’s goal of maintaining a balance between education and work. The additional five hours of permitted employment each week are designed to support students financially without compromising their academic commitments.

Education experts have welcomed the move, describing it as a positive step that will make New Zealand an even more attractive destination for global learners. “This policy update reflects New Zealand’s commitment to creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for international students,”

Students are encouraged to visit the official NZ website for detailed guidance on eligibility, application procedures, and updated visa conditions.
