Beijing, China has announced the launch of a new K visa, designed to attract global talent in science, technology, culture, education, and entrepreneurship. The visa, which takes effect from October 1, 2025, offers more entries, longer validity, and extended stays compared to China’s existing 12 ordinary visa categories.
A key highlight is that applicants will no longer need an invitation from a domestic Chinese employer or organization, simplifying the application process. Candidates must still meet qualifications set by Chinese authorities, such as age, education, and work experience.
Officials say the move is part of China’s workforce development strategy and aims to boost international cooperation and exchanges among young professionals, particularly in the sci-tech sector.
The announcement comes as the US tightens its own immigration rules, introducing a USD 100,000 fee for new H-1B visa petitions filed after September 21, 2025. Analysts see China’s K visa as a direct effort to attract talent who may now find the American pathway more expensive and uncertain.
China has been steadily opening up its borders with relaxed visa rules. In the first half of 2025, foreign nationals made 38.05 million trips to or from China, up 30.2% year-on-year, with visa-free entries rising nearly 54%.
With the K visa, China positions itself as a new hub for global innovators and skilled professionals seeking opportunities abroad.
