European Commission Adopts First Ever Visa Strategy, Guaranteeing Faster Visa Processing and Talent Attraction
On 29 January 2026, the European Commission adopted its first-ever European Union Visa Strategy, setting out a more strategic and modern framework for visa policy. The strategy aims to strengthen EU security, improve efficiency through digital transformation, promote economic growth, and attract highly qualified students, skilled professionals, and entrepreneurs. With faster processing, upgraded IT systems, and a renewed focus on global competitiveness, the EU is moving towards a more coordinated and future-ready visa management system.

On 29 January 2026, the European Commission (EC has adopted its first ever European Union visa strategy. It sets out a framework for a visa policy that is more strategic and supports the EU’s long-term interests.
The new strategy aims to make Europe safer, supporting economic growth, increasing global competitiveness, and improve efficiency through a more advanced and user-friendly visa system. In addition, the commission is adopting a Recommendation on attracting talent for innovation, to make EU more attractive to highly qualified students, skilled professionals and entrepreneurs to support its competitiveness in a globally.
The strategy introduces concrete measures to make use of the visa policy to advance EU’s interest in strengthening its security framework. This includes plans to introduce a modernized system for granting visa-free status to partner countries, with a new assessment framework. It also calls for upgrading the existing mechanisms under the Visa Code that allow possible targeted visa restrictions in response to hostile actions by countries that undermine EU security.
Additionally, the strategy places significant priority on modernisation. Advanced digital tools will be introduced to modernize visa and border management. By 2028, EU’s IT systems are expected to become interoperable, making it possible to search through multiple databases at once using one, central search, enabling authorities to prevent visa abuse.
Travel and mobility are a major influence of Europe’s economy. The strategy promotes multiple entry visas with longer validity for trusted travellers, and business personnels invited by trusted sponsors, to stimulate economic activity.
Overall, the European Union’s first Visa strategy marks a move towards a more coordinated and structured approach to visa management. The strategy sets a clearer direction for how Member States will manage visa processes in the coming years. It places visa policy more firmly within the EU’s broader agenda on security, economic growth and global competitiveness.
